The Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. George Magoha has said that the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms projects in Uasin Gishu County are 90 per cent complete.
Speaking during his tour of the projects at Uasin Gishu High School and Moi Girls High School Eldoret, Prof. Magoha noted that about 30 counties across the country had completed their constructions ahead of the transition of the junior secondary school learners.
The Education CS pointed out that his ministry was focused on delivering the 10,000 classrooms, adding that they have already managed to complete 9000.
Prof. Magoha noted that the government is keen on implementing CBC which currently hosts about 10 million children, through training teachers on the same.
“We have less than 900 classrooms to complete and we are at the roofing level, a performance target we have to deliver and the glory goes to our contractors at the grassroots level who have benefited from this and also the resolve of the principals who have worked together with us,” said prof. Magoha.
“We have trained grade 7 and 8 teachers on CBC implementation, grade 9 will be trained in January by the new government of the Republic of Kenya, and there is never a vacuum in government. With 10 million children on CBC, no government is going to consider removing CBC, it will basically work to improve it,” he added.
He assured the parents that the CBC system is well structured to enable children perform well in their examinations while at the same time urging them not to worry about the fate of CBC after the transition of the government’s administration when the new president assumes the office.
“We should have positive thinking for our children, nothing is going to happen. In terms of exams, I want to encourage the children here that, I have assessed a large number of children across the country, they can pass exam even if they were to sit for it today,” he said.
He further noted that the CBC is not set to scrap a way the boarding schools but rather may enable government to invest less in the boarding schools.
“CBC is not to abolish boarding schools, what is there, is that the incoming government might invest less in the boarding schools, we shall always have boarding schools because they have a plan in our system,” said Prof. Magoha.
