Cadbury Kenya has unveiled its mobile library drive which will see over 4,000 books donated to 25 schools in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
Dubbed ‘In our own words’ was launched at Langata Road Primary School.
Addressing the press, Marketing Lead Cadbury Africa Mr. Langa Khanyile said that Cadbury Kenya has handed over stories that Kenyans and Africans have written saying that they are doing it all for Africa.
“This story books tell African stories and are meant for children to appreciate African culture,” said Khanyile.
He thanked parents who have contributed in making sure African children consume African tales from the storybooks calling upon Kenyan parents to help create story books that children can relate with.
“I thank and appreciate all parents who have contributed in making this happen, we want to make sure our children see themselves in stories they can read,” said Khanyile.
Khanyile noted that a very low percentage of African stories are written in African language.
“Only two per cent of books in Africa are written in African language and two out of three parents have told us that stories written do not represent African context,” added Khanyile.
Khanyile revealed that Cadbury Kenya has distributed 5,000 books to 16 schools, among them libraries estimating that about 16,000 students have read the books.
Khanyile urged parents to buy African storybooks for their children to read.
The head teacher for Langata Road Primary School Ms. Mellisa Asika thanked Cadbury Africa for taking the lead in telling African stories to African kids.
“I want to thank Cadbury Kenya for coming to tell stories and distribute storybooks for our kids,” said Asika.
She added that she is working to inculcate reading culture into the children adding that she will place the storybooks in the library for all students to read.
