Over 100 needy and bright students who did their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in Vihiga County were selected to benefit from Governor Ottichilo’s scholarship.
Speaking during the launch of the fourth cohort of the scholarship, Vihiga Governor, Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, said the County Government will manage to fully sponsor the 100 students who were selected out of over 450 applications.
Dr. Ottichilo called on the beneficiaries to work hard and smart and ensure they post good results, which will enable most of them to join universities and other institutions of higher learning the end of four years.
He called on the students to maintain discipline saying it is only through discipline and hard work that they will realize good results.
Governor cautioned those who will be disobedient and perform poorly, that they will be dropped from the programme and the parents will be forced to pay their school fees and cater for their other needs.
“You have been privileged to benefit from this scholarship, therefore, focus on education, do not be swayed by other things so that you can become better leaders in future,” said Ottichilo.
One of the parents, Jane Khavere from Shamakhokho was overwhelmed with emotions and cried while thanking the Governor for considering her child and other children, saying their future depends on education.
Khavere said she had lost hope of taking her daughter to school since her husband is irresponsible and they live in a deplorable condition, sometimes even going without food.
Ian Lusigi, who scored 408 marks in KCPE from Mago Primary School and had been called to Maseno High School was full of emotion being a total orphan and thanked the Governor for considering him and promised to work hard in school.
He said the Scholarship had given him hopes and he will work hard to ensure that he achieves his dreams.
The Governor’s Scholarship started in 2019 and so far it has 447 beneficiaries, who are fully sponsored by the County Government of Vihiga.
