Narok: Bodaboda riders in the Majengo area of Narok town have vowed to deal firmly with rogue individuals using motorcycles to commit crimes, stating that no one will be allowed to tarnish the name of their business.
According to Kenya News Agency, the declaration came after a suspected motorcycle thief was beaten to death following a cycle theft incident that turned sour. The operators emphasized that their business is an honest one, providing them with a livelihood.
Brian Lemayian, Chairman of the Narok Bodaboda Association, expressed frustration over the frequent reports of stolen motorcycles shared on their social media platforms. He stated their intent to eliminate rogue members to restore order in the business. Lemayian warned that this incident should serve as a cautionary tale for those seeking to damage the reputation of the bodaboda industry, which has benefited many in the town.
Lemayian highlighted that the numerous incidents have resulted in frequent visits to police stations, as they consistently report these occurrences. He urged police officers to intensify their efforts in ensuring that all offenders face justice.
Gabriel Kosen, responsible for security within the association, echoed Lemayian’s sentiments, pledging not to relent until the misconduct is entirely eradicated.
Narok Central Sub-County Police Commander Benson Pamba confirmed the incident, affirming their commitment to addressing the issue amicably. Pamba revealed that a meeting was held at the William Ole Ntimama stadium in Narok town, where the Officer Commanding Station urged riders to cooperate and provide information to assist in curbing the vice.
Pamba emphasized that sharing information with police officers would greatly aid investigations and the apprehension of suspects. Prior to this incident, rider Alex Momanyi reported the theft of his motorcycle to Narok Central police station. The motorcycle was later spotted by the public, leading to the attack on the suspected thief.
Pamba confirmed that police officers injured during the rescue mission received treatment and were discharged, while the suspected motorcycle thief was pronounced dead upon arrival at Narok County hospital. The deceased’s body remains at the hospital morgue pending postmortem and identification, while the recovered motorcycle has been taken to Narok Central police station.
