Nairobi: Harambee Starlets Coach Beldine Odemba has been named the Betika/Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Coach of the Month for October. Odemba’s leadership has led the Kenyan Women national football team to a historic qualification for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), just two years after her appointment.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Starlets achieved a significant milestone by securing a 4-1 aggregate win over Gambia, which followed their previous elimination of Tunisia in February. This victory secures their place in the continental showpiece in Morocco, marking their return after a nine-year hiatus.
Odemba expressed her gratitude at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, where she received the Betika-sponsored award. She acknowledged the team’s character and commitment, thanking the award’s organizers and sponsor for their belief in the team and her coaching. Odemba is now looking ahead to the 2026 WAFCON in North Africa.
The SJAK Panel of scribes unanimously voted for Odemba, choosing her over other notable nominees including Shujaa Coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua, boxing tactician Musa Benjamin, Nairobi United FC’s Nicholas Muyoti, hockey’s Meshack Senge, Lionesses Rugby coach Simon Odongo, and national triathlon coach Camilla Lydya.
Panel Chairman Abuller Ahmed, who also serves on the SJAK Executive Committee, emphasized Odemba’s deserving win as a testament to her leadership and commitment. Betika Marketing Executive Marya Wachira also congratulated Odemba, highlighting the importance of recognizing tactical excellence in sports.
Kenyan women last participated in the CAF WAFCON in 2016, and with the recent victory over Gambia, the Starlets have qualified for the 2026 edition, uniting top teams from across the continent.
