A beehive of activity was witnessed Wednesday in both public and private secondary schools in Mombasa County, during the reporting day for the new form one students.
The County Director of Education, Peter Magiri said the exercise kicked off smoothly across the County without any hitches.
In an interview with Kenya News Agency, Magiri added that he expects that every candidate who sat last year’s KCPE will transit to secondary schools under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s hundred percent transition initiative.
“We expect the
Sub-County directors to file returns by the end of the day to provide us with the exact scenario across the county. In the meantime, the exercise has kicked off smoothly,” added Magiri.
The County education boss further directed school management to ensure every student selected to join their schools are admitted without any technicalities.
Magiri also urged parents to ensure no child who had been admitted in secondary school remains at home saying the government has provided enough resources towards secondary education in the country.
“We advise the parents to first consider their financial abilities before taking their children to school. There is no point in taking a kid to an expensive boarding school and dropping out after the first term. That is why the government has fully paid fees in day schools,” he added.
At Mama Ngina Girls National School, hundreds of parents and guardians braced the weeklong rains that have been received in the county to ensure their children grab the golden chance of joining the school.
The school’s Chief Principal Mwanahamis Omar, said they were allocated 288 form ones by the Ministry against their 250 capacity.
“But we are not crying. We appreciate the decision of our Ministry to allocate us such a number. We will ensure each one of them has a place to sleep within our dormitories,” added Omar.
She further indicated that, the school has also received over 700 requests from parents and guardians, who desire to bring their children to the school.
Omar indicated that of the overwhelming requests, they expect to consider few, depending on the slots that would remain after the government admissions are done.
“We expect some of those who have been admitted not to report for various reasons including distance. We shall then, go through those requests, some of them with over 400 marks and select a few,” she reiterated.
Some of the new form one students expressed their joy of joining the school saying they will work extra hard to fulfill their childhood dreams.
“I am very happy to be enrolled at Mama Ngina Girls. My expectation is to excel in studies and be a doctor and a top researcher. It is my dream to provide a cure for diseases like Covid-19,” said Rose Akora Makenga.
Parents, Sofi Saul and Fredrick Kathika also thanked teachers for giving their children a hospitable reception and a good learning environment.
“We are very happy that the school made life easier for both of us as parents and our children whom we brought to start their four-year journey,” they added.
