Aspirant George Wambugu Withdraws Demand for UDA Primary Rerun

Kisumu: Aspirant for the Olkalou Constituency seat, George Wambugu, also known as Delight, has officially withdrawn his demand for a rerun of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) primaries. This decision opens the path for the ruling party to submit the name of primary winner Samuel Muchina to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to Kenya News Agency, Wambugu’s appeal to his supporters to back Muchina has sparked dissatisfaction within his campaign’s core team. This team, which comprises a well-organized secretariat with strategists, researchers, data analysts, ward coordinators, and community mobilizers, has set firm conditions before agreeing to support Muchina. They insist on a formal agreement outlining how they will benefit if Muchina wins the election slated for July 16, 2026.

Wambugu, who secured 3,077 votes compared to Muchina’s 3,221 in the UDA nominations on May 8, faces pressure from his team. John Kariuki, who managed operations in the Rurii ward, emphasized the need for a written agreement on benefit-sharing, proposing a 50-50 employment division in the NG-CDF office in Ol Kalou town if UDA triumphs.

Simon Kibe, a supporter of Wambugu, echoed the sentiment for equality in partnership between the two factions. Similarly, Simon Ndung’u from Silanga highlighted the significant advantage Muchina stands to gain if Wambugu’s team lends its support, contingent on accommodating its members.

Further demands came from the youth who operated the Team Delight call center. They urged Muchina to fulfill job promises previously made by Wambugu. The young supporters had anticipated employment opportunities following Wambugu’s potential election as the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou, a seat left vacant after the passing of David Kiaraho in March.

Bishop Michael Kariuki advised Wambugu to prepare for the next general election, suggesting a return to the political arena in the future.
