Tharaka nithi: Kagumo Primary School and Junior School in Tharaka Nithi County have recently experienced significant improvements in their infrastructure and learning facilities. This transformation is primarily due to the efforts of former pupils, notably led by businessman Muthomi Micheni, who is renowned for his work in entrepreneurship and community development.
According to Kenya News Agency, Micheni, affectionately known as ‘810 the Business’, collaborated with local leaders to give back to his alma mater, highlighting the essential role alumni play in supporting public education. His contributions included tiling the school’s administration block, installing a modern ceiling, and donating new furniture to enhance the working environment.
Micheni expressed that his motivation to support the school stemmed from a desire to create a better learning environment for current students than what he experienced. “I studied here, and this school laid the foundation for who I am today. Giving back is my way of supporting education and motivating learners to believe that they can succeed,” he explained.
The school headteacher, Justus Gitonga, appreciated the initiative, describing it as a significant relief for the institution. Gitonga highlighted that the donated furniture, which included 19-seater desks for learners and 16 desks for teachers, helped reduce congestion and improved classroom organization. “This support shows goodwill and has helped solve many of the challenges we have been facing. The improved administration block has also enhanced service delivery and staff morale,” he remarked.
Gitonga also expressed gratitude to the Chuka Igambang’ombe National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) for constructing two new classrooms, which are expected to be operational next month, to accommodate the growing pupil population.
During the same event, Igambang’ombe Member of Parliament Patrick Munene announced that Kagumo Day Secondary School would offer free education. He has covered the school fees for all students and instructed parents not to pay any levies. “Any parent who takes their child to Kagumo Day Secondary School should not pay anything,” Munene stated, also donating Sh100,000 to the school’s feeding program.
Additionally, the MP pledged to construct a kitchen at Kagumo Primary School to support their feeding program and improve the well-being of the students.
