Nairobi: Vihiga County Commissioner Peter Mwangi Maina has urged the national government to support indigenous minority communities to ensure equitable representation and opportunities. Speaking during an interdenominational thanksgiving service and resource mobilisation drive for church development held at Kapchemungung Grounds in Vihiga County, Maina said members of the Terik community are educated and capable, and therefore should not be left behind in matters of leadership and development.

According to Kenya News Agency, Maina called on leaders to consider the inclusion of the Terik, also known as the Terikeek, in key positions, noting that as an indigenous minority group, they deserve equal opportunities like other Kenyans. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula echoed the sentiments, affirming the government’s commitment to ensuring all Kenyans benefit equally from development initiatives.

Wetang’ula, who was the chief guest at the event held in an area predominantly inhabited by the Terik community, said the government recognises all communities and is working towards inclusive development without discrimination. The Terik community, a minority Kalenjin subgroup, has a population of approximately 23,000 people and is mainly found in parts of Vihiga, Nandi, and Kisumu counties.
