Butere: The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Diocese of Butere is planning to initiate a water drilling project aimed at assisting young girls and widows who currently walk long distances to access water. This initiative is intended to alleviate the burden of water scarcity and improve the social and economic conditions of vulnerable families in the Butere region.

According to Kenya News Agency, Bishop Rose Okeno emphasized that the project is in line with the church’s vision of bridging gaps and engaging communities to facilitate lasting change. “We must provide clean and safe water for our young girls and widows who travel long distances every day. This project will help restore their dignity and give them time to focus on other meaningful activities,” Bishop Okeno stated during a meeting of the Diocesan Water Ad-hoc Committee held at the Bakhoya Boardroom.

She highlighted that many women and girls in rural areas dedicate several hours daily to fetching water, time which could otherwise be spent on educatio
n or engaging in income-generating activities. To oversee the planning and ensure accountability and community involvement, the ACK Butere Diocese has formed a special committee for the project.

The completion of the boreholes is expected to provide clean water to hundreds of households, reducing the need for long walks and enhancing both hygiene and productivity in the region. Bishop Okeno noted that this water initiative is a part of the diocese’s broader mission to promote social justice and community transformation through practical acts of faith. “When the church meets the practical needs of the people, faith becomes alive and communities are strengthened,” she asserted.

The ACK Butere Diocese remains committed to advocating for community-based programs that focus on education, health, and environmental care.
