Nairobi: Scientists, policymakers, and agriculture experts from across the region gathered in Nairobi to celebrate and honor Dr. Suresh Lingadahalli Mahabaleshwara, a leading maize pathologist, for his transformative contributions to Kenya’s maize research and plant health systems over the past decade. Dr. Suresh has been instrumental in combating Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN), a disease that threatened maize production in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Suresh has worked with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Africa for 11 years. During his farewell meeting, which was attended both physically and virtually, experts praised his efforts in containing and managing MLN. Dr. Alice Murage of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) commended his leadership and partnership with national institutions.

Dr. Murage highlighted the success of the Naivasha MLN screening facility, which has maintained global phenotyping standards. She noted Dr. Suresh’s efforts in advancing gene-edited resistance technologies and his contributions to MLN diagnosis and surveillance, which have improved Kenya’s disease risk understanding.

Dr. Murage also acknowledged Dr. Suresh’s work in modernizing the Kakamega pathology facility, enhancing research capabilities. She praised his mentorship, which has bolstered the competence of breeders and seed production teams across the region.

Prof. Theophilus Mutui of the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) awarded Dr. Suresh a certificate of appreciation. He highlighted Dr. Suresh’s impact on harmonizing diagnostic protocols and enhancing Kenya’s phytosanitary decision-making capacity. Prof. Mutui emphasized Dr. Suresh’s role in benefiting institutions, the private sector, and smallholder farmers.

Tributes came from regional and international experts, lauding Dr. Suresh for his leadership and collaboration on biosecurity issues. Dr. Suresh reflected on the urgency of plant health threats, emphasizing the unity and partnerships formed in response to MLN.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Suresh expressed gratitude to partners across Africa and highlighted the achievements made during his tenure. He emphasized the resilience and innovation of Africa’s agricultural systems, which have been strengthened through collaboration and shared goals.
