Bungoma: The Bungoma Jitume Centre Manager, Dennis Asachita, has underscored that apart from gaining digital skills, students being trained under the Jitume program also learn how to earn an income through online jobs offered on various platforms on the internet.
According to Kenya News Agency, Asachita, who was speaking at a centre in Bungoma South Sub-County, Bungoma County, said that currently 200 students at Bungoma National Polytechnic are undergoing the digital training alongside their normal lessons. He mentioned that plans were underway to enable youths in the surrounding community to benefit from the training, which aims to provide access to digital skills and opportunities for online income generation.
Jitume, an initiative by the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, focuses on equipping the youth with access to digital services, skills, and internet opportunities. It promotes self-reliance among the youth by encouraging them to utilize the digital space to secure online jobs and earn a sustainable livelihood.
Ruth Murithi, Manager of Knowledge Economy and Innovation for the Technopolis Development Authority, visited the hub and emphasized that the program’s goal is to provide devices to the training hubs, thereby connecting youths to global job opportunities. She noted that the organization collaborates with several partners to ensure the program’s nationwide benefits amid the ongoing digital transformation.
Dr. Godfrey Murunga, Principal of the Bungoma National Polytechnic, highlighted the institution’s mission to empower youths by preventing idleness and equipping them with income-generating skills. He described the initiative as an effective approach to engaging the youth and called for support to acquire additional devices and infrastructure to expand the program’s reach.
Nickson Mulongo, a beneficiary of the Jitume program, urged youths to participate in the training, sharing that it has enabled him to earn income through online jobs over the past two years. He advised that online jobs require patience and resilience, encouraging youths to seize the given opportunities to earn a living.
