Kisumu: A total of 729 youth from all the wards in Elgeyo Marakwet county will be hired under the Climate Workx Programme. The County Commissioner Dr. John Korir announced that 705 of these young individuals will undertake various duties and earn 500 daily, while 24 will serve as supervisors with a daily wage of 550. The group will be divided into two cohorts, each working for 10 days over a two-week period for the next six months.

According to Kenya News Agency, during a county implementation committee meeting, Dr. Korir revealed that over 13,000 youth have applied for the positions. He assured all applicants of a transparent selection process. Priority will be given to those from humble backgrounds, with the stipulation that only one youth per family can be hired, and they must be aged between 18-35 years.

Dr. Korir emphasized that the selection panels, led by the deputy county commissioners, will aim for gender balance, ensuring that half of each gender is hired. Additionally, people with disabilities will be included. Successful candidates must ensure their phone numbers match their ID numbers and be registered with M-Pesa for payment purposes, with no proxies allowed to collect wages.

The committee agreed that the 705 slots will be distributed evenly across the four constituencies, with selection panels allocating slots based on the wards within each constituency. The youth will primarily work in the roads and environment sectors, engaging in activities such as clearing bushes and drainages, planting trees, and establishing nurseries.
