The County Government of Bomet has set aside Sh30 million for its scholarship programme meant to benefit 250 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) pupils placed in various secondary schools.
The announcement was made by Bomet Governor Prof Hillary Barchok in Longisa, where he urged bright students from poor backgrounds to apply for the scholarship noting that they would be given priority.
Prof Barchok said the programme, which has been running since it was initiated by the late Governor Dr Joyce Laboso in 2018, has benefitted over 1000 students.
He said the scholarship programme was aimed at enabling bright students with over 350 marks in KCPE to have an opportunity to acquire basic education just like others from well-to-do families.
At the same time, the Governor said 10 students will be picked from each of the 25 Wards in the County adding that students in both boarding and day secondary schools will be considered.
Prof Barchok said the plight of the needy students gives essence to the bursaries and that the kind of school a student is placed in should not tilt consideration of deserving cases.
