Unprecedented call for reform of global finance to fix debt & climate crises – Project Everyone letter

Stephen Fry, Annie Lennox, Christiana Figueres, Forest Whitaker, David Miliband, Graça Machel, Helen Clark and Paul Polman among 100+ signatories of letter to G20 leaders

LONDON, April 14, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Eighty years on from the establishment of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, a coalition of leading actors, politicians, artists and economists have written to leaders of the world’s major economies, urging them to upgrade the global financial system to solve the debt and climate crises and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The letter is being published ahead of World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings and builds on calls for global public finance reform led by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, Kenyan President William Ruto, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

It urges rich countries to triple their investment in multilateral development banks, end crippling debt, and make polluters pay for the environmental damage they cause.

Signatories include economist Mariana Mazzucato, businessman Dr. Mo Ibrahim, actor Dia Mirza, former politicians Rory Stewart, Joyce Banda, Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, and filmmakers Richard Curtis, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and KondZilla.

“The institutions of world finance have lost their muscle,” the letter reads. “The world is rocked by conflict, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, and spiralling inflation. All of which are compounded by the devastation wrought by climate change. The Sustainable Development Goals are under threat. Too many feel scarcity, austerity, despair.”

Dr Joyce Banda, Former President of the Republic of Malawi: “As African leaders, we need to invest in resilience, education, health and nutrition but we’re being held back by unfair debt. Climate change has brought untold suffering to our people through loss of infrastructure and arable lands, leading to incessant hunger. We have no choice but to borrow more, perpetuating the vicious cycle. This has to stop. It’s time to transform global public finance to pave the way for a fairer, more stable future for all.”

David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee: “Climate, conflict and poverty are closely linked – the world’s most fragile and conflict-affected states are often the most climate-vulnerable. To end extreme poverty and unlock sustainable development, G20 leaders should back financial architecture reform, deliver more concessional finance via the World Bank’s International Development Association, and work with civil society to ensure the money gets to where it’s needed most.”

The letter – also signed by Save The Children, ONE Campaign, Oxfam, Project Everyone and Christian Aid – urges the leaders of the world’s major economies to seize the opportunity of reform: “Change is already underway. The architects of the World Bank and the IMF earned their place in history. This is your chance to fulfil their promise: to transform these instruments for peace and prosperity and truly set them to work in our common interest.”

KEPSA Launches Carbon Market Guidebook For Kenyan Enterprises

The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), in partnership with The World Bank, has launched the Carbon Market Guidebook for Kenyan Enterprises at a stakeholder-engaging event in Nairobi.

The guidebook aims to provide step-by-step guidance for Kenyan enterprises in various industries including; agriculture, waste environment, forestry, trade, banking, insurance, manufacturing, energy, transportation, construction, and hospitality to navigate the complex and fast-evolving landscape of carbon markets.

‘Carbon markets offer an alternative financing avenue that can empower enterprises struggling to access traditional climate finance,’ noted Dr. John Wandaka – Vice-Chair of KEPSA Environment, Water and Natural Resources Sector Board during the launch.

He added that funding constraints hindered the ability of Kenyan enterprises to contribute meaningfully to climate action.

Dr. Wandaka said KEPSA acknowledges the recent legislative amendments and international agreements geared towards bolstering the country’s en
gagement in carbon markets, notably the 2016 Climate Change Act that underwent amendments last year to integrate carbon markets into the mainstream.

KEPSA has played a pivotal role in spurring green investments through initiatives such as co-chairing the Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals (P4G) national platform with the National Treasury.

Through this platform, the organization has facilitated the implementation of 14 partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable practices, including the Partnership for New Plastics Economy in Kenya and Sustainable Special Economic Zones (SSEZs).

Council of Governors Chairperson of the Environment and Climate Change Committee Dr. Wilber Ottichilo lauded the timely release of the Carbon Market Guidebook, noting that it aligns with the urgent need to address climate change.

Governor Ottichilo added that by engaging with local governments and aligning with national climate objectives, private enterprises in the carbon markets space could contribute to emissions’ red
uction while also fostering economic growth and community resilience.

While commending the partnership between KEPSA and The World Bank, Mr. Isfandyar Khan – Lead Financial Sector Specialist at The World Bank, noted that KEPSA provides a special linkage to the enterprise.

He also pointed out the ongoing digitization efforts in Kenya and in the global market where more companies were now using digital technology in the carbon market space.

The event brought together key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors to discuss opportunities and barriers that Kenyan enterprises faced when engaging in carbon markets.

Other speakers at the event included Mr. Stephen Odua – Director of Business Environment, Ministry of Investment Trade and Industry; Mr. John Elungata – Secretary for Administration, State Department of Environment and Climate Change among others.

Other leaders from KEPSA who attended the event included Mr. Victor Ogalo – Deputy CEO; Dr. Jackson Koimbori – Senior Circular Economy and Cli
mate Change Coordinator at KEPSA; Ms. Emily Waita – Chair of the Environment, Water and Natural Resources Sector Board; Ms. Susan Maingi – Chair of Trade and Industry Sector Board; Mr. John Kalungi – Vice Chair, Lands and Housing Sector Board; and Mr. Ben Roberts – Chair, ICT Sector Board.

The event also provided an opportunity for exhibitors to showcase innovative carbon market-related solutions.

It also featured panel sessions on creating a policy-enabling environment for carbon markets in Kenya; and challenges and opportunities in the carbon market for Kenyan enterprises.

The Carbon Markets Guidebook provides credible information about regulations in understanding carbon credits as a way to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Creating Platform for Religious Leaders to Share Best Practices, Peacebuilding Essential, Says State Minister of Peace

Addis Ababa: State Minister of Peace, Kairedin Tezera stressed the need to create a platform for religious leaders to share best practices and develop the initiative for peacebuilding and environmental stewardship.

The Second International Religious Institutions conference kicked off today in Addis Ababa.

The two-day conference brought together faith leaders and religiously linked institutions from various countries to discuss pressing issues, foster understanding and promote peaceful coexistence across the globe.

The conference aims to foster peace, human dignity, development, and preservation of the environment, and to counter hate speech, violence and xenophobia in Africa and across the world.

Speaking at the occasion, Peace State Minister Kairedin Tezera said ‘we stand at a crossroads. The winds of change are upon us marked by climate in crisis, yearning for societies where human dignity and rights are the cornerstone of policy and action.’

At this juncture, the work of religious fathers regarding pe
ace building and environment protection is critical than ever, he stressed.

For generations, faith fathers have served as anchors of peace and foster dialogue, he underscored, adding that ‘today, this could be more urgent than ever.’

The globe is entangled with mammoth challenges such as climate crisis, displacement, conflict, and drought.

‘Yet, in the middle of these challenges, there is reason for hope. Religious peacebuilding offers a powerful path forward. It is the moral authority to bridge difference, promote empathy, inspire collective action for a given legacies and secures sustainable peace,’ the state minister underlined.

Faith communities have a unique capacity to speak to the hearts and minds of people, fostering understanding and cooperation regardless of ethnic and cultural identities.

Therefore, he underlined ‘ Let us create a platform for religious leaders to share best practices, extensive knowledge and develop the initiative for peace building and environmental stewardship.’

We have wi
tnessed the transformative power of religion in peacebuilding, he noted, adding the Ministry of Peace has taken exemplary action.

The interfaith council which has been established brings together religious leaders from diverse traditions to address human challenges, including the critical issue of environment, he said.

A Green Legacy Initiative, a nationwide tree planting program exemplifies powerful link between religious peace building and developmental action, according to the state minister.

Faith leaders have been instrumental in mobilizing communities, emphasizing the connection between a healthy environment and a peaceful society.

‘This initiative not only combats deforestation, but also fosters a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility for the future,’ he underscored.

Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia, Secretary General Kesis Tagay Tadele said on his part that the conference will provide opportunities to discussion on key issues in which religious communities have deep interest an

Stakeholders Raise Concern Over Increase In The Number Of Street Children In Kitale

The swelling numbers of street children in Kitale Town has raised concern among stakeholders.

Speaking at Kitale Museum, Kwanza Sub County Deputy Children Officer Wilfred Hazegere urged the Trans Nzoia County Government to help build a children rescue center in the region.

He said this would address the issue of the increasing number of street children in the town.

‘As we speak, there’s no government structure or institution built to accommodate street children in this region. I urge Governor George Natembeya to go through the drafted Child Protection Policy document which we believe will help unlock solutions to problems of street children in Trans Nzoia County,’ he said.

Revealing that the government has put in place strategies to ensure street children got a chance to access education, Hazegere said that no street child should fail to go to school because of lack of fees.

‘Education is an equalization factor. It is for this reason that we have put in place bursaries for street children to help them ac
cess education which is a basic right,’ he explained as he urged street children who dropped out of school because of fees to approach the Children’s office for help.

Trans Nzoia Street Children Rehabilitation Consortium Chairperson Joseph Okumu revealed that plans were in place to ensure that most if not all street children whose homes could be identified are reunited with their families.

However, he voiced the challenge staring at them saying that most of the street children when returned to their homes would always find a way back to the streets.

He warned those who used street children as a source of cheap labour saying that it was in contravention of children rights.

‘There are some individuals using these street children to traffic drugs and some use them as a cheap source of labour. I want to warn them that it is unconstitutional and soon the law will catch up with them,’ he said.

John Simasi, a one-time street child, urged street children to stop drug and substance abuse and challenged those who
have a chance to go back to their homes to do so and focus on education.
