Allegations of displacement, violence beleaguer Kenyan conservancy NGO

Published by
Mongabay

A well-known conservation nonprofit in Kenya is embroiled in accusations that it uses a privatized and neocolonial conservancy model to deprive pastoral communities of their rights to use their lands, according to research by the Oakland Institute, a policy think tank. Relying on petitions, court cases and in-person interviews with community members in northern Kenya, the California-based Oakland Institute says in a Nov. 16 report that the Kenya-based nonprofit Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) keeps herders off long-held, traditional grazing areas. NRT allegedly cuts off the access of these com… Continue reading “Allegations of displacement, violence beleaguer Kenyan conservancy NGO”

Seegene’s High Multiplex PCR Assay Capable of Detecting New Omicron Variant

The Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Master Assay can simultaneously detect the wild-type coronavirus and the Omicron variant in a single test tube

Seegene will support countries in need of diagnostics to help slow Omicron’s spread

SEOUL, South Korea, Nov. 30, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Seegene Inc. (KQ 096530), South Korea’s leading molecular diagnostics company, today confirmed that its Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Master Assay is capable of detecting the Omicron’s unique pattern of mutations. The well-established PCR-based test recognizes four SARS-CoV-2 genes and five notable mutations on the spike protein, all in a single test tube. This provides accurate results on whether a person is positive for COVID-19 and if they have the Omicron variant within 4 hours. To maximize its use, Seegene will support countries in need of tests, so they can rapidly detect cases of Omicron without the labor and equipment required for full genomic sequencing.

The Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Master Assay simultaneously detects four wild-type SARS-CoV-2 genes (E gene, RdRP gene, N gene, and S gene) and five notable S-gene mutations: HV69/70 deletion, Y144 deletion, E484K, N501Y, and P681H. Since the latest variant Omicron contains HV69/70 deletion, N501Y, and P681H mutations, this CE-IVD marked test can detect Omicron.

The first Omicron (B.1.1.529) case was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24. Just two days later, the WHO designated the variant a Variant of Concern (VOC), based on its unusually large number of mutations and early evidence of its spread. Despite a series of rapidly implemented travel bans, it has now been reported in Africa, many European countries, and a few in Asian countries.

The process for identifying novel variants typically involves next-generation sequencing of the isolated virus, which would take a few days to get the complete result. For more rapid detection, Seegene’s Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Master Assay can detect the variant in the very first stage of screening. Public health officials can then rapidly isolate and contact trace people who are infected with this variant of concern.

“In order to contain the further spread of Omicron, it is extremely important to preemptively detect the Omicron variant at the primary screening stage. To that end, we will fully support countries in need of our tests to enable more rapid detection of the latest variant,” said Dr. Jong-Yoon Chun, Seegene Founder and CEO. Along with strengthening surveillance testing, the implementation of relevant quarantine measures will give more time for countries around the world to contain the rising Omicron infections and protect their citizens.

Transport CAS Urges Residents To Utilize Ongoing Rains

Transport Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Wavinya Ndeti, has urged Machakos residents to utilize and harvest the ongoing rains to support agricultural activities that will mitigate drought and combat food insecurity in the eastern parts of Kenya.
Wavinya was speaking at Holy Spirit Catholic Church Kangundo, during the ordination anniversary of Rev.Fr. Raphael Kimeu. She encouraged farmers to exploit the ongoing rains to grow main crops that will increase food production in the country.
“Availability of water and forage is likely to rise due to the onset of long rains that will positively impact food security in the county,” Ndeti said.
Ndeti pointed out that the rains will help in promoting animal health because through the rains, animals will have enough green pastures to feed on. “The ongoing rains will boost livestock body condition due to the availability of pasture,” said Ndeti.
Ndeti also asked for reinforcement on the issue of indiscipline cases in schools. She urged all the stakeholders to help curb indiscipline in various learning institutions.
The CAS added that parents are vital stakeholders when advising and giving direction to the children and requested them to be present in their children’s lives and ensure that they have ample time to study at home.
“Parents should be at the forefront in addressing matters concerning discipline and education when it comes to their children. You should give your children ample time to concentrate on their assignments,” Ndeti advised.
Earlier in September, the President had declared drought affecting most parts of the country a national disaster. He instructed the National Treasury and the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government to spearhead Government efforts to assist affected households including water and relief food distribution and livestock off-take.
However, recent statistics from the Kenya Meteorological department weather forecast show that in the past few days this month of November, rainfall has been experienced in most parts of the country.
In July, the Director, Kenya Meteorological Department, Stella Aura, said the climate outlook for the October- November- December months 2021 indicates that most parts of the northern and southeastern region will experience rainfall.
The Transport CAS was accompanied by Machakos County Women Representative Aspirant for 2022, Rita Ndunge. Kangundo Central MCA Moses Mitaa and Kangundo aspiring MP Athanas Ndolo.

Social Media Violence Instigators Warned

The Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata has issued a stern warning to those inciting violence and sharing inflammatory messages on social media in the run up to the August 2022 General Election.
Mr Elungata said the state will deal mercilessly with those instigating ethnic hatred and incitement to violence regardless of their status in life.
The RC said the government was monitoring social media platforms and that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was on the lookout for any criminality perpetrated online.
He also said hate speech will come under intense focus as the country moves towards next year’s high stakes General Election.
The administrator advised politicians and opinion leaders to desist from hate speech that could inflame passions and create animosity among the diverse communities in the region.
“We urge the residents to resist being used by rogue politicians and ethnic demagogues to disrupt peace and tranquility in the county,” he said, adding that Kenyans should cherish the peace they have and refuse to be lured into electoral violence by self-seeking politicians and ethnic demagogues.
Elungata who is also the chairman of the regional security and intelligence committee directed the security agencies in the region to be on the lookout for persons with the intention to incite violence for selfish political gains.
“The DCI will be monitoring social media sites for warlike political speeches as the country hurtles to the high stakes elections next year” he warned.
The regional administrator underscored the need to promote social media platforms in a way that does not jeopardize national security through propaganda for war, hate speech and incitement to violence.
The RC asked politicians in the county to be mindful of what they say in public and warned them that they will be punished for utterances that risk peaceful co-existence in the region.

Security Tightened In Kwale Ahead Of Festive Season

Kwale County Security Committee has announced that it has tightened security in the county ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The coastal county is a world tourist destination thus calling for security attention. According to key business players in the county, the region is expecting to boom in tourist activities from December.
Addressing the press at Baobab Hotel in Diani, Kwale County Commissioner, Gideon Oyagi said that the government has deployed extra security along the coastline.
Oyagi added that the security team will intensify its security patrols in hotels and cottages to safeguard tourists.
“We have briefed our security officers and they are very alert to deal with people who might be looking for opportunities to commit crimes,” Oyagi said.
The CC noted that the government will conduct mapping of the cottages and villas in Diani and dispatch enough security personnel to keep an eye on the tourist facilities.
He said that the owners of recreational facilities should register with the security department in the county to make the process seamless.
“All the facilities along the coastline of the county must be registered. We want to know how many security officers are required in each facility. The main agenda of the government is to protect its people,” Oyagi said.
Kwale County has State-Of-The-Art recreational facilities with Diani beach voted as the leading beach destination in Africa for seven years in a row which have been attracting many tourists across the globe.
Tourism is the backbone of the county’s economy which has created plentiful employment opportunities for close to 78% of the locals in the county.
Oyagi asked the visitors to seek guidance when taking part in water activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, water skiing, windsurfing and glass bottomed boat tours.
“We have enough experts on swimming from both the government and the hotels and all visitors will be guided appropriately. We aim to protect every visitor in our county,” Oyagi said.
The CC advised the members of the public not to visit the ocean during the nightfall to avoid cases of drowning which has resulted in casualties.
The administrator noted that the government will support the tourism industry which has been hit hard by Covid -19 pandemic.
Oyagi urged visitors to observe all the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health such as keeping social distance, sanitizing, and washing of hands.
Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caretakers (KAHC) Coast Branch Executive Officer, Sam Ikwaye, said that tourism stakeholders are expecting many visitors following the relaxation of the Covid-19 guidelines and the lifting of economic and travel restrictions.
Ikwaye added that the security team in the county has been very supportive in providing security to key tourist sites. “We are working closely with the security team and we are happy that we have seen new development that will make these places safer,” Ikwaye said.
The tourism official noted that the performance of the industry is at 70% majority being local tourists with the percentage expected to hit 90% as Christmas and New Year holidays beckons.
Ikwaye said that the industry is working hand in hand with the Ministry Of Health to ensure that more than 90% of the tourism stakeholders have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
He added that the industry will continue enforcing the health guidelines to secure the industry which has been under siege for close to two years because of the pandemic.
“We have enough medical officers issuing Covid-19 vaccines in our facilities and if the government will make it compulsory for all visors to be vaccinated, then we shall not hesitate to comply. The bottom line is that we are prepared to safeguard our visitors,” Ikwaye said.
At the same time, Oyagi asked road users to exercise caution as they approach the festive season. He said that many accidents have been occurring during the festive season because of the rush thus requesting all road users to be gentle.
He noted that more traffic officers will be deployed along the busy Likoni-Highway, Mombasa-Nairobi highway, and Kwale- Kombani route to conduct vehicle checkups.
“We shall deal with all drivers and motorists that are breaking traffic rules. These people must know that they have a responsibility to protect the lives of the people,” Oyagi said.
The CC added that the security team will be working closely with officers from National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to enforce the traffic law. He reminded owners of Public Service Vehicles to ensure that their vehicles are fixed with speed limiters to reduce cases of speeding.
The CC asked drivers and motorists not to drive while under the influence of alcohol. “We shall establish alcohol testing centers along the busy highways and arrest those who are driving while drunk. We don’t want to hear cases of accidents in this county,” Oyagi said.
Statistics from NTSA reveal that 439 road crashes were recorded from January to October 31. This is an increase of 42 cases from the 397 recorded in the same period last year.
The data shows that 3,733 people have died countrywide from road accidents, of which 1,293 were passengers, 364 drivers, 600 passersby, 1,405 motorcycles, and 71 pedal cyclists.
