FAO To Help Restore Mt. Elgon Forest

Trans Nzoia County is set to benefit from a US$ 6 million (Sh. 618 million) from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) towards the restoration of Mt. Elgon Forest.

The Funds will go towards activities meant to restore the degraded forest ecosystem, with the view of enhancing climatic conditions for sustainable food productivity.

This will include tree planting, capacity building and adoption of relevant policies, that will ensure realization of the goal of the financing.

Speaking to KNA, Monday, County Executive (CEC) for Environment and Natural Resources, Andrew Musungu, revealed that the programme was set to commence in due course.

The CEC pointed out that relevant policy framework for the proposed activities has already been shared with the donor, as well as other stakeholders.

Mr. John Mengw’a, the Department’s Chief Officer, reiterated that the laid down plans to ensure the programme yielded envisioned fruits for the general public are in place.

The National Government through relevant State Departments as well as local communities will be key stakeholders in the project that will also see improved water catchment at the source of the Kiptogot River, whose water has been tapped and connected to supply to residents of Endebes and Kwanza constituencies.

Director of Programmes, Projects and Strategic Initiatives in the Ministry of Environment Ms. Agnes Yobterik, said the Scheme will also be part of increasing tree cover and water catchment protection.

County Agriculture Chief Officer (CO), Robert Musikoyo, observed that the move will go a long way in ensuring favorable weather conditions for food production that will in turn result to food security.

The CO at the same time underscored the importance of planting trees that bear fruits which can as well be commercialized without necessarily affecting the environment through chopping down of trees.

Local communities are also anticipated to benefit from diverse benefits that come along with the project during its implementation time, as well as thereafter.

Already the County Government had allocated Sh.20 million towards conserving the environment and the move by FAO, is a plus to the initiative.

The Government has been engaging in efforts aimed at increasing tree cover to at least 20 per cent in the whole Country.

Efforts by the County Administration has seen the County reach 18 per cent tree cover even as the leadership strives to reach a 25 per cent mark by the end of next year.

Turkana Tops In Voter Registration

Turkana County has been ranked first countrywide based on the achievement in the ongoing Voter Registration Exercise.

According to the current Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Voter Registration Report as by 16th October 2021, which ranked counties based on their achievement, Turkana had managed to register 10,539 new voters out of a target of 62,500, which translated to an achievement percentage of 16.9 Per Cent.

Turkana County Elections Manager, George Oyugi, said though the Commission had made that achievement in Turkana, he noted that poor mobilization and lack of support from leaders, would hamper the efforts to achieve the remaining target.

“I request leaders kindly to come up and mobilize people to registration so that we may be able to register them all for the remaining two weeks, instead of waiting for the last minute rush,” said Oyugi.

The County Elections Manager noted that many people do not have Identity Cards despite having already processed them.

He, therefore, requested the National Registration Bureau in Turkana to dispatch the uncollected Identity Cards to their owners, in order for them to get registered as voters, for the next General Elections in 2022.

The County Elections Boss urged the County leadership to support the Commission in terms of logistics and mobilization of people.

He added that other county governments are working hand in hand with IEBC in terms of logistics and mobilization, the idea he proposed, should be embraced by Turkana County.

“Leaders are not cooperating in mobilizing and sensitizing people, to turn up for the exercise, other counties are going to surpass us,” he lamented.

Lokitaung Hospital Operationalizes Its Theatre

Lokitaung Sub-county Hospital in Turkana North has operationalized its first operating theatre and eye clinic.

The project, implemented by the County Government of Turkana in partnership with Spanish Eye Doctors through MCSPA – Missionary Community of Saint Paul Apostle – under the Turkana Eye Project, includes two operating theatres, one minor theatre, six-bed pre-operation and six-bed post-operation.

The operating theatre is expected to reduce the number of surgical-related referrals and minor ophthalmic ailments to Lodwar County Referral Hospital.

Before the official opening of the Turkana Eye Project, Turkana Governor, Josphat Nanok, had carried out an outreach programme in Turkana North and Kibish between 5th and 30th September.

The outreach managed to screen 211 patients, out of which 62 were referred for surgeries in the new Lokitaung operating theatre.

According to the County Ophthalmic Services Coordinator, Samson Lokele, the eye camp began on the 8th to 13th October, whereby 130 patients were treated at the eye clinic in addition to the 62 surgeries done by local and Spanish volunteer ophthalmologists.

Apart from being the first in Turkana North, communities from neighbouring Ethiopia and South Sudan, will also benefit from the facility, which is part of County Government’s effort to promote peaceful co-existence and good neighborliness.

Living in a remote village in Naturomoe in South Eastern part of Ethiopia, Atirr Lokai’s life took a dramatic turn when a growth started in her right eye which also started itching, including the surrounding part of the face.

Suffering from terrible headaches as a result, she went to her parish priest for pain killers to ease the pain.

“For three months, my headaches prevented me from even doing house chores or milking. If it were not for the Father bring me to this hospital, I would still be in pain,” she said through a translator.

On the last day of the eye camp, the 65-year-old Attir was patient number 57 to undergo an eye operation in the newly constructed operating theatre.

She was among the six patients from the Nyang’atom community on the Ethiopian side of the border. Already discharged, Attir heads back home, which is a 12-hour drive from Lokitaung, to join her family.

“I’m very happy that there are no more headaches and at home now, I can continue with my responsibilities as before,” glad Attir said.

Governor Lauds Improved Medicare In Kisumu

Kisumu County Governor, Prof. Anyang Nyong’o, has lauded the improved access to quality Medicare in the area.

Nyong’o said the County Government has made great strides in equipping health facilities across the county with the necessary infrastructure and equipment to enhance access to quality medical services.

He pointed out the ongoing expansion and upgrade of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), where State-of-the Art equipment has been installed to help thousands of patients from Kisumu and the entire Nyanza region, who hitherto sought services in Eldoret and Nairobi.

The Hospital, he said, has been equipped with an ultramodern Covid-19 Management Center with modern life saving equipment.

“We have already installed our oxygen production plant at the facility with a capacity of 600 litres per minute, which has greatly helped with the emergency management of Covid-19 patients,” he said.

In a statement to the media, Nyong’o said the County Government has installed an electroencephalogram (EEG) machine at the facility.

The EEG is a medical test that detects abnormalities in the brain and can be used to differentiate epilepsy from other seizures related to brain disorders.

This, he said, will go a long way in helping epilepsy patients at the same time help single out other seizures for proper medication.

To reverse the rising number of cancer cases in the area, Nyong’o said plans were underway to set up a Cancer Center at JOOTRH.

The project, set to be completed early next year, he said, was key to support patients who are forced to travel to Nairobi and outside the country to seek treatment.

To cushion patients from the high costs of treatment, Nyong’o said, the County Government’s Marwa Health Insurance Scheme, which targets indigents, has been rolled out successfully.

The scheme benefitting 45, 000 vulnerable families, he said, shall be scaled up this Financial Year to reach 90, 000 families.

“These developments which are contained in my manifesto show that the County Health Services is on an upward trajectory,” he said.

The Governor called for partnership with the private sector and development partners to address existing gaps in the sector.

Bungoma Women Receive Free Fistula Surgeries

A Safaricom Sales representative, Ms Sophie Onyango has urged women with fistula complications not to suffer in silence but to visit health facilities for treatment.

Onyango spoke in Webuye where 60 women suffering from fistula underwent successful corrective surgery at the Webuye Referral Hospital in Bungoma County during the free fistula operation campaign that ended over the weekend.

The campaign was the brainchild of Bungoma County Government’s health department in collaboration with the Safaricom Foundation, the Office of the First Lady, Amref Health Africa, Flying doctors service and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Onyango added that the Mpesa Foundation injected Sh15 million into the Fistula campaign to make a difference in the lives of suffering women.

She added that Mpesa Foundation also runs a program known as Maternal Child Health which has also been escalated in other counties including Samburu to ensure safe parenthood.

“This program is not only here in Bungoma. We have so far initiated it in Samburu County and in eleven other counties under the banner, ‘ Uzazi Salama’ safe parenthood,” she affirmed.

She said that the program has so far been very helpful to women suffering from Fistula. “Please if you are suffering from Fistula seek treatment at nearest health facility,” she urged.

Bungoma Governor, Wycliffe Wangamati, lauded the partners for the noble move that he said would restore the dignity of the suffering women.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr Ademola Olajide, a representative for UNFPA in Kenya, said an Obstetric Fistula occurs when a mother has a prolonged obstructed labor but doesn’t have access to emergency medical care.

Dr Olajide added, “During prolonged labor, the mothers contractions continually push the baby’s head against her pelvis and soft tissues caught between the baby’s head and her pelvic bone become compressed, restricting the normal flow of blood.”

If medication is not given urgently, the medic said, the victim will uncontrollably leak urine, stool or sometimes both for the rest of her life.

Farmers To Benefit From A New Information System

The County Government of Kericho has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Precision Agriculture for Development (PAD), to provide farming information to farmers and complement efforts by Agricultural Extension Services.

The County’s Ministry of Agriculture, through PAD, will use a two-way SMS information system that provides actionable and customized farming advice to the farmers for free.

Over 10,000 farmers will benefit from this technology, where lead representatives will be trained on how to manage, appreciate and use the new information system, to provide bulk SMS to farmers, exchange relevant questions on their farming and challenges they are undergoing.

The Information will be relayed in real time, thus providing the much-needed information and help in eradicating information gap.

Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project Coordinator, Eng. Odoyo J. Bittar, lauded Precision Agriculture for Development organization for aiding farmers in Kericho, adding that the move to provide farmers with another option to access farming information and extension services, was going to enhance food production for both home consumption and surplus for sale.

“Farmers groups who are mainly producers of sorghum, finger millet, bananas and dairy farming, who will benefit from this program will utilize the information system to run their farming activities and will benefit richly from agricultural practices, to increase their farming production and eventually earn good returns in order to uplift their families,” Bittar said.

Maize farmers in Kericho have successfully benefited from the technology during the fight against Fall Army-Worm, where a farmer in the area utilized PAD SMS to contain the attack on their crops.

Through this system, farmers were able to distinguish between Fall Army-Worm and other worms, where they used the available information to fight the infestation.

Jackson Abuli, an agronomist at the Precision Agriculture for Development, said PAD will provide farmers with free, timely information on the crops they intend to grow and any other advice on pest, farm inputs and other practices they need to use, for better yields.

PAD also assists farmers to access rigorous and better research methods on various crops. The system will also avail farmers with impactful messages which will be beneficial to them.

“Evidence obtained as a result of use of the SMS services, revealed that smallholder sugar cane farmers realized increased yields by 11.5 percent, whereas farmers who were advised through PAD to apply agricultural lime fertilizers to their sugar cane, were discovered to have achieved a 10-24 percent increase and studies show that the same farmers were more likely to use the fertilizers in their next planting season, in order to achieve similar results, Mr Abuli said.

Kericho County Chief Officer for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miss Lillian Kerio, emphasized the need for farmers to get extension services through the platform, so as to obtain the latest and new farming techniques to enhance their farm practices. Hare knowledge, and Marketplace was built to give farmers the products they need to

With the adoption of PAD, farmers are now set to have an increase in their farming practices, thanks to the PAD SMS where farmers will connect to trusted resources and can be easily accessed by farmers who have mobile phones.

Governor Mvurya Commissions Feedlot Farm

Pastoralists in Kwale County can now breathe a sigh of relief after Governor Salim Mvurya commissioned a feedlot farm in Mackinnon Road ward in Kinango sub-county.

The Mackinnon Feedlot Farm Limited is a privately owned company established to export livestock to overseas markets.

A feedlot or feed yard is a type of animal feeding operation which is used in intensive animal farming, notably beef cattle, but also swine, horses, sheep, turkeys, chickens or ducks, prior to slaughter.
The private livestock farm that breeds improved local Borana cattle is open for Kwale community to learn about their management at no fee. The Borana cattle have a high market value and weigh up to 900kgs.

The owner of the feedlot Abdi Ibrahim says he aims to export close to 10,000 animals in a month with each fetching for more than Sh.100, 000.

Mvurya said that Kwale needs such investors who are ready to impart agricultural skills to farmers in the County.

“With the perennial cycle of drought and famine, feedlot farming is the way to go especially in Kinango and Lunga Lunga sub counties where pastoralism is very common” said Mvurya.

With such a high number, the farm will generate a strong source of livelihood for the residents of Kwale.

The farm which is located in a rich livestock region brings to an end the struggles faced by livestock keepers especially in finding a desirable market for their animals.

For several decades, pastoralists in the county have been incurring losses because of a limited market.

The majority of them have been selling their animals in the weekly open-air markets before they are taken to the slaughterhouses by brokers.

Addressing the press during the opening ceremony for the farm, Governor Mvurya expressed his gratitude to the private investors for solving the market problem faced by many livestock keepers in the county.

Mvurya asked the residents to get into business and use the opportunity to change their lives and challenged the residents to take advantage of the farm to learn and improve their cattle and feeding options.

”If farmers used to get small wages from slaughterhouses now, they can earn huge money from this farm. It’s a good project that will eventually end poverty in this county. ”Mvurya said.

The Governor noted that such companies are keen on transforming the county.

He added that his administration is working closely with investors to ensure that the people of Kwale get the best services.

‘‘I welcome other investors to bring companies here. Through such companies, the economy of this county will grow tremendously” said Mvurya.

The Feedlot which houses many segments such as pasture preservation center, livestock treatment center, and other significant sectors will offer employment opportunities to the youth.

The two-term Governor asked the residents to cooperate with the investors in the farm to ensure that they benefit from the services offered.

The county government has been at the center of promoting livestock farming in the county.

In July, the county government through the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries issued 100 beef cattle and 80 heifers to livestock keepers across the 20 wards.

In addition, area Mackinnon Road Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Joseph Danda said the feedlot farm is a breakthrough to the struggling farmers.

He said pastoralists in the area will be given a priority thus encouraging them to increase their animals to meet the demands of the farm.

‘‘I don’t want to see animals dying because of the drought. Whenever the weather gets worse, please bring your animals here.’’Danda said.

The MCA noted that farmers are still subscribing to traditional methods of livestock keeping, consequently hindering them from succeeding in the livestock sector.

He said the lack of proper methods of livestock keeping has cost farmers, particularly during droughty seasons where thousands of animals die for lacking pasture and water.

Danda said once the farmers receive relevant skills, they will sustain the demand of the farm and better their living standards.

Kwale County enjoys favorable conditions for livestock rearing uniquely, the beef cattle like Boran and Zebu breed.

Boran and Zebu breeds exist well in hot and dry regions like the Coast and North Eastern.

The farm which bears a modern laboratory will act as a ladder to farmers by offering supplementary diets to fatten their animals.

The existence of the farm is a significant boost to farmers who will be equipped with distinct skills in the use of technology like pasture preservation and prevent the losses caused by drought due to poor methods of grazing.
