Garissa County government officials, today, led the residents in cleaning the town streets as part of the activities to mark this year’s World Environment Day set for Saturday June 5th, 2021. The exercise was organised by the County Department of Environment bringing together National and County government’s staff, students and personnel from partner organizations. The group swept and collected garbage along the busy Kismayu road and the main market. Speaking after the exercise, the County Secretary, Abdi Sheikh, called on all residents, businesses and corporate organizations to join hands in taking environment conservation measures and making Garissa town clean. Sheikh said that ridding the town of filth was the first step towards progress since a clean environment promotes good health and was a catalyst for attracting more investment. This year’s World Environment Day theme is ‘Ecosystem Restoration and Focus on Resetting Our Relation with Nature’. It will also mark the formal launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). The Decade will also be the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals. Environmentalists have, however, noted that to achieve restoration at the required scale, incentives and financial investments must be made in changing the way lands and oceans are exploited in research and education and in inspiring a movement of people, businesses and governments through celebrating success stories.
